By Adrian Leighton. Had a wonderful day meeting with students and faculty from Chiang Rai Rjabhat University’s Ethnic Studies Department. This is the only Ethnic Studies program in Thailand, it seems, and the students are most impressive. They spend one semester in their sophomore year in a Native village in Thailand, and have a senior thesis project related to this experience. As an instructor at Salish Kootenai College, I got to share the back ground of Tribal Colleges in the US in an hour long presentation and then we had a great round table discussion. The University also has an amazing archive of textile patterns and designs from indigenous groups throughout SE Asia, as well as a biodiversity center that is documenting local native foods and spreading the word.
